Seven Year Hitch

This month, April 2019, sees seven years of the Calmgrove blog since I hitched it to WordPress (although I’ve since reposted revisions of some of those early posts and deleted others).

Now, it was a score or so of years ago that I started hearing more and more about weblogs appearing online. My first instinct had been to think it ridiculous for people to put out personal diaries into the ether: whoever would want to read about the lives of random strangers?

It turns out that many millions do. And that includes me as well as you. Now, I know there is a lot of negative stuff about social media that we’re all well aware of, but perhaps the positive aspects aren’t given enough credit—aspects like making the acquaintance of new people, hearing different points of view, receiving the kindnesses of strangers.

And of course there’s learning new things, coming as it were face to face with new ideas. Hence this blog’s slogan which I established right at the start: Exploring the world of ideas through books.

Unlike vlogging or podcasting most blogging is about the written word, however that writing is done. And much writing is about ideas, concepts, formulations — essentially ways in which we see and express the world without and the world within — using cuneiform, pictograms, numerals and alphabets, through graphite, ink and pixels.

I do often wish I spent less time on social media and more time actually reading; and yet without social media how could I share my thoughts on reading with so many like-minded, thoughtful and generous readers around the world? And how could I get such varied feedback on those thoughts? Certainly not through locking myself away in a library.

Some of you have been around with me for a good many of those seven years, others I may have only had the pleasure of knowing recently. I’d like however to say to one and all ‘thank you’ — thank you for being there with your comments, your encouragement, your quips and of course your own blogs. I should almost change my slogan to Exploring the world of bloggers through books.

With any luck we may collectively still be here in another seven years to compare notes. I hope so anyway!

  1. A very happy blogversary to you, Chris. It’s been a real pleasure getting to know you – I always look forward to reading your unique and deeply considered posts. I completely agree, social media and the internet in general have opened up exciting new worlds to so many people like ourselves. Here’s to the next seven years on Calmgrove! 🥳🎈🥂

    1. Thanks, Paula, the feeling’s mutual! “Unique? I try to be original but it’s never easy! “Deeply considered”? Debatable, but that’s ever my intention!

On a serious note, I’m so glad for blogging, where I can pretend that normality (whatever that is) and positivity and politesse are the order of the day. I currently spend too much time on Twitter where the opposite applies, and it can’t help but get into the soul. Bloggers such as you persuade me that there is polite conversation still to had out there.

    1. Huzzah, we’re all of one mind then! Blogiversary is indeed a recognised tag (though I suspect blogversary is too) on the presumed combination of ‘blog’ and the last part of ‘anniversary’. But I believe we should refer to the ‘blogosphere’…

  2. The kindness of strangers has been a wonderful, unexpected aspect of blogging that has rewarded me immeasurably. And while I don’t have much connection with other kinds of blogs to compare, I think our shared interest in the world of books helps us to connect in remarkably kind and open-minded ways. Thanks for all you do, and I look forward to continued friendship in the future.

    1. My partner has been officially diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum, and like me has found more sympathy, understanding and support with other autists and many neurotypicals on social media than may otherwise be available in everyday life; shared passions for literature and related matter are what I value in blogging.

Kind and open-minded is exactly what I look for and find here, and you, Lory, are among those I consider as my virtual friends. I appreciate it very much: long may this friendship last!

  3. Congratulations on your blog’s seventh birthday, Chris! I’m always pleased to see a new post from you, even if I don’t always have time to comment. I usually forget about my own blogiversary, but it will be ten years for me this October!

    1. Woohoo, that’ll be a real milestone, Helen! Do you think you might mark it in a special way?

And ditto for me too, I don’t always comment on your posts but I’m impressed with the range of your reading, not just historical fiction but crime and contemporary fiction; and I do enjoy your Commonplace Book quotes.

Wow, that’s quite some time, and consistently fascinating, I like doing short, regular trips into your archives…

Thank you for all your blogs, you make me interested in so much new stuff & see books I already cherish from new perspective. The Internet might be destroying what’s left of our democracies, but they are niches of awesomeness that almost make it worth it 😉

Congratulations on such a glorious occasion and keep up the good work!!

    1. That’s exactly one of the delights of this book blogging, Piotrek, the chance to be introduced to unfamiliar works and to see old works in a new light. That’s a real consolation when so much else that we hold dear is being tarnished or even trashed.

And thanks for your kind comments, I wasn’t really fishing for compliments but wanting to acknowledge all that I’ve gained from fellow bloggers over the years!

Happy Seven Year Hitch! I look forward to 7 (at least) years more!!

When I think I have been blogging for only 3 1/2 years and have learned so much from you and others, it amazes me. My tbr is sagging under the weight of recommendations of authors and titles from other bookbloggers…and I swear, someday I will read (because I cannot find) a Joan Aiken 🙂

    1. I feel we’re all so lucky to find this like-minded and generous community online and share things that give us joy in living, Laurie, and it really doesn’t matter if we’re early to the party or a more recent arrival. It won’t be long before you’ll be marking that seventh year milestone, believe me. 🙂 And you will find that Joan Aiken some day, and discover what readers like me have been banging on about!

    1. I can’t remember the exact date, Ola, but it’s round about now–no doubt WordPress will remind me! And you’ve reminded me that I should dig out and finish The 7 Laws of Magical Thinking as that will remind me of how much store we set by significant numbers, dates and anniversaries, even though it’s often irrational! 🙂

  6. Happy Blogiversary, Chris! I have also learned a lot from you and you have introduced me to new books and authors. I had not heard of Earthsea before Witch Week 2018 and now I’m eager to read through the series this year! I wish you many more years of blogging!

    1. Thanks so much, BJ! And it’s a mutual thing, isn’t it, I’m learning so much from bloggers like you about bookish matters and even about Life, the Universe and everything! Really hope you enjoy Earthsea (and I must settle down to reviewing the last two books soon).

  7. Buon avviversario, Chris! I was wondering, we’ve spent together at least six of these seven years!! It has been really a great pleasure bumping into your blog and thank for all the effort and love you convey in your posts.
    Grazie 🇮🇹🇬🇧🇪🇺🙋

    1. Prego, Stefy! Has it really been six years? I suppose it must be, how the arrow of time flies! I suppose you must have some significant blogiversary coming up, surely, but as always it’s the quality and not the quantity that counts, and you and your blog have the last in spadefuls. 🙂

BTW, ‘avviversario’? I’ve been trying to find a translation, unless it’s a mistype for ‘anniversario’, but Google has failed to find an answer for me…

  8. What is mundane and blah for one is fresh and entertaining for those in an entirely different environment, indeed, and even identifying with those from a similar one with similar experiences is worth reading if well presented. So what constitutes a boring blog . . .?

    1. What constitutes a boring blog? Answer: one I don’t follow. As I’m still following Colonialist I think you can draw your own conclusions! I can only hope that my mundane and blah blog presents a sufficiently different perspective to have kept your attention all this time, Leslie! So long as ‘blah’ doesn’t turn to ‘bleurgh!’ and cause us to go ‘Bah!’ I think we’re in with a chance… 😁

  9. Internet says copper and wool are the traditional 7th anniversary gifts, so I send you virtual coppers and woolens in honor of your blogiversary. Many congratulations, not to mention even more thank-yous. It’s been great to be one of your readers and occasional collaborators all these years, and I expect in the coming decades (yes!) we’ll find new ways to connect across the airwaves.

You’ve inspired me to check my own blogging history, and I see that I’m approaching 10 years since my first post on another blog hosting site. Let’s see if I can think of something to mark the occasion.

    1. Thanks for your virtual gifts, Lizzie, I’ll need the coppers if and when Brexit happens, and the woollens for the extreme weather that climate change is already bringing (snow today, while last month was the warmest March on record). Tin and/or aluminum will be your due soon!

Thanks for your support when I was not long blogging and when you were still elirosswriter, and for the collaborative reviewing and tag blogging projects we did. I would like to consider something similar in the coming months, if you’re up for it, perhaps after Witch Week (which we ought to start seriously considering soon–I’ll have to dig out my notes).

  10. An anniversary! I tip my hat, raise my glass, and…um…some other three-word phrase to celebrate the spirit of your idea sharing. While I also wish I had more time on writing or reading books, I can’t imagine giving up my work on WordPress because it helps me connect with those outside of this fantasy-reader desert….

    1. Thanks so much, Jean! (… ‘do a knees-up’ is the third phrase you might be seeking, perhaps?) That’s at least a plus of growing old: family with their own kids, so, plenty of time to read, maybe to … write? And yes, thank goodness for blogging and its global community!
