Today, on the eve of the halfway mark for the twenty-eight days of February, I’m already getting excited about March. As well as planning on reading books for the Wales Readathon and Reading Ireland Month I’m hoping to revisit titles by the late Diana Wynne Jones and Terry Pratchett, both of whom left us in this month.
I’m glad to see that Kristen at https://WeBeReading.com is again running March Magics, the annual celebration of these two fantasy writers (who were both West Country authors by adoption, with connections to my hometown Bristol).
Kristen’s introductory post gives an outline plan of the focus of this year’s event, and I’d like to share with you her principal aims and how my response may shape up.
Kristen writes that she chose the theme “All Together Now” for a few reasons. I’ve highlighted the first two:
- First is that we all professed our fondness for coming together during the month and to having and making friends with a shared love of one or both of these authors. Many (most? all?) of us are obviously feeling lonely and isolated after this long ordeal and some of us need to be reminded that we can still come together past physical boundaries.
- Second, both of these authors do marvelous things with ensemble casts, whether it’s the Chrestomanci clan at the castle or the Nac Mac Feegles under the chalk. Celebrating teamwork and shared responsibility in literature may even inspire us in our real lives.
She has also devised a March Magics bingo card so readers may keep track of themes they cover. I’m considering The Shepherd’s Crown (the last Tiffany Aching title) for Terry Pratchett, and for Diana Wynne Jones either Time of the Ghost or A Tale of Time City (or possibly both) and already I can see they’ll fill in some of those bingo card windows straight away! Check under the hashtag #MarchMagics on Instagram and Twitter because there’ll definitely be some activity there too.
