Part of the Christmas ritual, when my son comes home for a few days, is to sit up by the fire late at night and read ghost stories to each other. MR James always features.

And that was certainly the case formerly, such as when Henry James introduced his The Turn of the Screw as the start of that very ritual, and Dickens and Gaskell had previously capitalised on the custom.
